According to Kris, she and her best friend Vice are amazed with the newest masterpiece of award-winning director si Erik Matti because its theme is very timely and relevant to what the country is experiencing right now.

Julia Montes, Enrique Gil, and Enchong Dee's 'The Strangers' Premieres in Cinema One

Three of today’s hottest young stars take on the supernatural this Sunday (September 1) as Enrique Gil, Julia Montes, and Enchong Dee star in the Star Cinema horror film “The Strangers” that is set to premiere on Cinema One.

“The Strangers” tells the story of Pat (Julia Montes) and Max (Enrique Gil), twin siblings who decide to go out of town to the far flung oasis of Murcia for their 18th birthday. Joined by their parents, Roy (Johnny Revilla) and Evelyn (Cherry Pie Picache), their grandfather Pete (Jaime Fabregas), his temporary caregiver Paloma (Janice de Belen), and their newly hired family driver Toning (Nico Antonio), the family’s happiness is cut short when their van hits an old lady on the road. Unsure of what happened, the family tries to search for the body but it is nowhere to be found.

The incident on the road serves as the first of a series of horrifying events—as the family even gets stranded in an isolated village on the way. There, Pat makes an alliance with a local named Dolfo (Enchong Dee), an enigmatic, but suspicious young man whom the villagers suspect to be someone that isn’t exactly human.

The film’s director, Lawrence Fajardo, has gained much acclaim over the years with his various visually-exciting indie works. Aside from “The Strangers”, he was also responsible for having directed the highly-acclaimed action-drama “Amok” and “Posas”, which won Best Film at the Hanoi International Film Festival in Vietnam.

Ben Affleck is the New Batman in the Sequel of 'Man of Steel'

A month after Warner Bros. greenlighted the “Superman vs Batman” movie as sequel to “Man of Steel,” the film outfit announced on Friday that Ben Affleck will play the role of the Dark Knight.

Ending weeks of speculation, Ben Affleck has been set to star as Batman, a.k.a. Bruce Wayne. Affleck and filmmaker Zack Snyder will create an entirely new incarnation of the character in Snyder’s as-yet-untitled project—bringing Batman and Superman together for the first time on the big screen and continuing the director’s vision of their universe, which he established in “Man of Steel.” The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, and Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

The studio has slated the film to open worldwide on July 17, 2015 (including the Philippines).

Last month’s surprise announcement of the new movie featuring both Superman and Batman created a wave of excitement and immediately fueled discussion and debate—among fans as well as in the media—about who would put on the cape and cowl of Bruce Wayne’s alter ego.

Snyder successfully re-imagined the origin of Clark Kent/Superman in the worldwide blockbuster “Man of Steel,” which has earned more than $650 million worldwide to date, and climbing. The director will now create an original vision of Batman and his world for the film that brings the two DC Comics icons together.

Affleck will star opposite Henry Cavill, who will reprise the role of Superman/Clark Kent. The film will also reunite “Man of Steel” stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane.

In the announcement, Silverman stated, “We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics’ most enduringly popular Super Heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some. His outstanding career is a testament to his talent and we know he and Zack will bring new dimension to the duality of this character.”

Snyder also expressed his excitement about the casting of Affleck, noting, “Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry’s Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can’t wait to work with him.”

Kroll added, “We are so thrilled that Ben is continuing Warner Bros.’ remarkable legacy with the character of Batman.

He is a tremendously gifted actor who will make this role his own in this already much-anticipated pairing of these two beloved heroes.”

Affleck recently starred in the Academy Award®-winning Best Picture “Argo,” which he also directed and produced, earning acclaim and a BAFTA Award nomination for his performance in the film, as well as a number of directing honors. In 2010, he starred in and directed the hit crime thriller “The Town.” His recent acting work also includes “The Company Men,” “State of Play,” and “Hollywoodland,” for which he received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor. Earlier in his career, Affleck starred in and co-wrote (with Matt Damon) “Good Will Hunting,” for which he won an Oscar® for Best Original Screenplay.

The new Super Hero film is being scripted by David S. Goyer from a story he co-created with Zack Snyder. Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder are producing, with Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan and Wesley Coller serving as executive producers. Production is expected to begin in 2014.

The film is based on Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster, and Batman characters created by Bob Kane, published by DC Entertainment.

"One Direction: This is Us" Movie a Huge Hit

When Academy Award-nominated documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock was approached to make “One Direction: This Is Us” – a movie about One Direction -- he jumped at the chance.

“One of the things I’ve always tried to do from the very beginning of my career is create very popular documentaries,” says the “Super Size Me” director. “And I think that this film, coming off the work I’ve done in the past is the next step. Making something that’s successful to a large audience that tells a great story, that is really intimate and gets you into their lives, but at the same time, is also really entertaining and engaging, with great music.”

Naturally, meeting bandmembers Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson was important. Spurlock found the boys completely charming but also level-headed about the phenomenon they were in the middle of experiencing. Notes Spurlock, “They’re very fun. I think they’re incredibly grounded considering the amount of crazy that’s surrounding their lives on a daily basis. And I think that was one of the things that I really liked about them.”

It’s not enough, says Spurlock, that they’re “five good looking guys that get put together in a band. That happens all the time. But the fact that, you know, they actually had the talent and the ability and the drive to kind of push it as far as they have, and continue to do, is remarkable.”

Spurlock filmed in various locales for almost six months, including the band’s performance in Mexico City in early June, 2013. The crew number ranged anywhere from Spurlock alone holding a camera without even an audio person, to fully coordinated concert set-ups involving, says the director, “an army of people.” Filming the band’s O2 performances alone were massive undertakings for someone used to the run-and-gun nature of most documentaries. Says Spurlock, “Probably about, I don’t know, 250 people were working on the concert when we shot at the O2, it was massive.”

As for the behind-the-scenes footage, which runs the gamut from backstage mischief before the show to touching hometown scenes, like Harry working at the family bakery, those moments alone amounted to 500 hours of material. Editing it down was challenging, but the band were instrumental in helping Spurlock and the editors pick the most choice moments. Says Spurlock, “They’ve given really insightful feedback about things that are very personal to them … to things that they remembered that we shot that we have forgotten about, and to remind us to dig and find. It was like, ‘Oh my gosh, you’re right, that was a great moment.’”

For producer Cowell, Spurlock was the ideal choice as director because he was never going to stage scenes or manufacture magic. “Morgan is somebody who likes to kind of eavesdrop,” says Cowell. “He wants to pick stuff up without people realizing that they’re being filmed and that’s his skill and he’s very patient. It’s not about set pieces or ‘Do this for the camera.’ He’s just put the cameras in all these different places and he’s just filmed what it’s like being in this group. It’s fascinating.”

What ultimately emerged from the editing process was the sense that moviegoers were going to get a special peek into the members’ lives. Adds Spurlock, “You feel like you really do get to become a part of this journey and these boys and this band.” It could even generate new fans, he suggests. “I think every One Direction fan should take someone who isn’t a One Direction fan, because I think when people see the movie, they’ll see a different side to these boys that they probably didn’t think existed or they didn’t think they would enjoy. And I bet they’ll convert a lot more fans than they think they will.”

As for the decision to film the 02 concerts in 3D, Cowell says it’s “unbelievable. The 3D is sensational. It actually makes the concert like being there. It’s really clever.”

None of "One Direction: This Is Us" would have happened, however, if the boys hadn’t put their faith in the project, and from the get-go, they all believed in what could be achieved.

“There’s a tremendous amount of trust you have to have, between you and the subjects that are in the film,” says Spurlock. “It takes time. It takes conversations. You have to spend time with one another to talk, feel comfortable, and know that this person is there to tell an honest story about you, and tell a story that you ultimately want to be told. And, you know, I give them credit. I mean, they were really open and honest with us about their lives, their fears, about the things that were going on with them, and kind of letting us come into their world. It’s a big undertaking, and it takes a lot of courage, and they were fantastic about it.”

In the end, says the director, the boys in One Direction understood that this was an opportunity to document a special time in their lives. “They realize this movie is a time capsule,” notes Spurlock. “They already know how special it is, and to be able to have something like this where you can really show – whether it be your family down the road, your kids down the road, something you just want to keep for yourself – that really does capture the essence of this moment in its purest form.” Adds Spurlock, “I think they’ll treasure this whole experience.” And is he now a fan?

“Listen, I’ve seen thirty-plus One Direction concerts at this point,” says Spurlock. “I am like a hardcore Directioner now!”

Opening across the Philippines on Friday, August 30, “One Direction: This Is Us” is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International. Visit www.columbiapictures.com.ph to see the latest trailers, get free downloads and play free movie games.

'Sapi' Trailer

Brilliante Mendoza  ventures into a horror film - his very first horror film ever! It is a joint venture of Mendoza’s Centerstage Productions and Solar Films.

Described in TIFF's official website as a "caustic cultural satire," the film starring Dennis Trillo will participate in the Vanguard section of the annual gathering along with 13 other international films.

It is scheduled to premiere in September.

Written by Henry Burgos, "Sapi" centers on a news team pressured to win back the audience share of its TV station. The three-man crew led by Trillo's character finds that "documenting an actual spiritual possession would be their only hope."

According to TIFF's description of "Sapi," Mendoza aims to highlight the "moral failings of the contemporary news media" with the unfolding of the film's story.

Gerald Anderson and Piolo Pascual's Internationally Acclaimed Movie "OTJ" Hits PH Cinemas this August 28!

After capturing the hearts of international moviegoers and film critics in its world premiere in the prestigious 66th Cannes International Film Festival in France and bagging honors in the recently held 2013 Puchon International Fantastic (PiFan) Film Festival in South Korea, the much talked about action-thriller co-produced by Star Cinema and Reality Entertainment, "OTJ" (On The Job), will finally hit Philippine cinemas on August 28 (Wednesday).

Under the direction of award-winning filmmaker Erik Matti, "OTJ" is topbiled by two of the most brilliant actors of their generation Piolo Pascual and Gerald Anderson, veteran actor Joey Marquez, and 2013 PiFan Film Festival best actor Joel Torre, who are all hands-down to their film's one-of-a-kind script.

"Natapos ko 'yung script ng isang basahan lang. I fell in love with the project right away. I was so moved by it. I really felt there's something different, something definitely out of the box," said Piolo, who is proud to be part of Star Cinema's return to the action genre. "It's an honor for me to be part of a film that's paying tribute to the action genre na medyo hindi na natin ginagawa. Kung maaalala natin, action ang unang genre na pinasok ng Star Cinema 20 years ago, 'yung "Adan Ronquillo ni Senator Bong Revilla."

Part of the continuing grand celebration of Star Cinema's 20th anniversary, "OTJ" shares the personal quest for justice of three men--NBI agent Francis (Piolo), Sgt. Joaquin (Joel), and two prisoners Daniel (Gerald) and Tatang (Joel).

Gerald shared that with the intensity of their action scenes, they felt that they were filming a Hollywood project. Kakaibang 'kilig' 'yung epekto nung trabahong 'to kasi alam kong hindi araw-araw or every project, pwede ko 'tong gawin."

If "OTJ" is memorable for Piolo and Gerald because it is their first action movie, it also made a mark in the heart of Joel because of the important character given to him by Star Cinema at Reality Entertainment.

"Tatang is a role of a lifetime for an actor," said Joel about his role in the movie that viewers should look out for. "At my age, akala ko relegated na lang ako sa tatay roles, na you get to shoot in five days and that's it. But "OTJ" made me a significant part of the story. Kapag napanood niyo na 'yung pelikula, malalaman nyo kung bakit siya hinangaan abroad."

Joey, meanwhile, is excited about how viewers will respond to the ‘new Tsong’ that is featured in the film “First time sa ganitong klaseng film na medyo unorthodox kumpara sa usual na ginagawa ko. Sa ‘OTJ,’ aksyon na aksyon talaga ako! It was a very challenging role. Parang it's something that somehow ‘upgraded’ me my little experience sa showbusiness," said Joey.

Also part of "OTJ" are Angel Aquino, Shaina Magdayao, Empress, Dawn Jimenez, Leo Martinez, Michael de Mesa, Vivian Velez and Rayver Cruz.

Don't miss the internationally-acclaimed action-thriller na "OTJ," showing on cinemas nationwide on August 28, 2013.

"Hello Stranger," Thai's Favorite Romance Movie Airs in Cinema One

One of Thailand’s favorite romantic comedies is hitting television screens and is set to put a whole new identity on love stories on Sunday (August 18) as Cinema One airs the award-winning Thai film “Hello Stranger”.

Starring model-actor from ATM Chantavit Dhanasevi and singer-actress Nuengtida Sopon, “Hello Stranger” is about a young man and woman who both separately decide on taking a vacation to Korea. There, the two meet, and in a serendipitous atmosphere, decide to tour the country together with a far from normal kind of catch—that they keep their names secret from each other, in a story that reveals that when it comes to the identity behind true love, what’s in a name is far from what truly matters.

“Hello Stranger” was directed by the award-winning director Banjong Pisanthanaku, who garnered the title of “Most Promising Talent” for this film. He is also the director behind the popular Thai comedy horror film “Pee Mak”, which stars Mario Maurer and is currently being highly anticipated to hit local cinemas.

Upon the film’s commercial release, “Hello Stranger” went on to gross 130 million baht in Thailand and became one of the most successful movies of its time. The film was also screened in various Asian countries including the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, China, and Taiwan.

Don’t miss out on this sweet Thai treat on Blockbuster Sundays movie block (August 18) at 8:00 p.m. on the Philippines’ number one cable channel, Cinema One (SkyCable channel  56).

An awkward, self-conscious teen learns to embrace his individuality with the help of an unconventional mentor in Fox Searchlight's “The Way, Way Back,” a humorous and heartwarming story of self-discovery from Academy Award® winners Nat Faxon and Jim Rash (“The Descendants”).

The longtime writing partners make their feature-film directing debut with an original script packed with heartfelt wit and echoes of summer vacations past and present.

The critically acclaimed film stars Steve Carell, Toni Collette (“Little Miss Sunshine”), Allison Janney (“The Help”), AnnaSophia Robb (TV's “The Carrie Diaries”), Sam Rockwell (“Iron Man 2”), Maya Rudolph (“Bridesmaids”) and Liam James (“2012”), Amanda Peet (“Identity Thief”), Rob Corddry (“Warm Bodies”).

“The Way, Way Back” is the coming of age story of 14-year-old Duncan’s (James) summer vacation with his mother, Pam (Collette), her overbearing boyfriend, Trent (Carell), and his daughter, Steph (Zoe Levin). Having a rough time fitting in, the introverted Duncan finds an unexpected friend in Owen (Rockwell), the gregarious manager of the Water Wizz Water Park. Through his funny, clandestine friendship with Owen, Duncan slowly opens up to and begins to finally find his place in the world—all during a summer he will never forget.

From a quintessential moment of teenage angst, Oscar® winning screenwriters Faxon and Rash have fashioned an original screenplay that captures the self-consciousness, uncertainty and hopefulness that make up adolescence.

“That first scene of the movie actually happened to me,” says Jim Rash. “I was in the car with my mother’s second husband and he made the same speech about how I wasn’t getting out there and taking advantage of what life has to offer.”
“The first scene defines the dynamic between Duncan and the people surrounding him,” observes Faxon.
As the writing partners began to fill out the story of a young man trying to find his voice in a confusing new situation, they decided his journey should include a timeless venue of which they both have fond memories—an old fashioned water park, where their lead character finds sanctuary and independence during histransformative summer.

Faxon and Rash remember spending long days at water parks as kids, dropped off there by parents hoping to enjoy some vacation fun of a more adult variety. “Those were days of reckless abandon,” says Faxon. “The freedom was exhilarating. We saw the water park setting as an opportunity for lots of laughs that would marry well with the world of Duncan’s home life. It balanced the tone of the film.”

The pair, along with Alexander Payne, won an adapted screenplay Oscar for the 2011 film “The Descendants,” directed by Payne and starring George Clooney. The recognition that followed was what gave them the opportunity to direct “The Way, Way Back,” a script they began working on almost a decade earlier.
“Jim and I wanted to make a timeless, nostalgic movie that brings together humor and poignancy,” says Faxon.

“The films we liked best growing up didn’t talk down to kids,” says Rash. “Now that time has given me a different view on life, I can look back and laugh, understanding what came from all that angst.”
Opening across the Philippines this September, “The Way, Way Back” is distributed by 20th Century Fox through Warner Bros.

Columbia Pictures' new, explosive action thriller, “2 Guns.”

Two operatives (Denzel Washington, Mark Wahlberg) from competing bureaus are forced on the run together. But there is a big problem with their unexpected partnership: Neither knows that the other is an undercover federal agent, in Columbia Pictures' new, explosive action thriller, “2 Guns.”

Baltasar Kormakur (“Contraband”) reteams with Wahlberg to direct “2 Guns” from a screenplay that is written by Blake Masters (TV's “Brotherhood”) and based on the Boom! Studios graphic novels by Steven Grant.  Boom!

Studios published the first issue of writer Steven Grant and artist Mateus Santolouoco’s explosive five-issue miniseries, “2 Guns,” in 2008. Grant told the intriguing tale of Bobby Trench and Michael Stigman, two undercover agents who discover that the amount of cash locked in the bank vault that they are robbing is not remotely what they expected. When the two find themselves double-crossed by the very men who set them up to do the job, they must go on the run from the organizations they vowed to serve.

Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Boom! Studios Ross Richie walks us through the source material: “It’s a story about characters ground up by the system, set within the framework of government agencies that pursue their goals, no matter the consequences. Steven took the familiar noir trope of an undercover cop tale, and he deconstructed that. He also included lots of comedy and action to make it incredibly entertaining.”

The series of graphic novels is written by a man with a curious take on this style of writing. “I like doing crime comics,” admits Grant, who calls “2 Guns” an “anti-buddy” story. “I don’t actually believe in good and evil. From my perspective, people walk a line, fall on this side or that, and wobble back and forth. It’s just a natural existence. I tend to view my material not as dramas, but as situational comedies where everybody in the story thinks they know what’s going on, and actually nobody in it knows what’s going on.”

Producer Marc Platt, who has shepherded to the big screen action hits such as “Wanted” and “Drive,” was keen to develop the graphic novel series brought to him by his colleague, fellow “2 Guns” producer Adam Siegel. Platt discusses his initial interest in the source material: “I always love stories where there are two characters who are seemingly very different, and the journey of the story is the way in which those two characters find their way to each other. Here were two guys who don’t want to be in the same general vicinity of each other, but who are forced to work together and learn something about each other and themselves in the process.”

Siegel recalls what drew him to the project, and the manner in which he worked with a talented screenwriter to flesh it out: “When I read Steven Grant’s graphic novel, I was blown away by the great characters and the clear concept that these were two guys who were undercover from each other.” “2 Guns” is a natural progression of expression for director Baltasar Kormákur, a critically acclaimed actor and director in his native country of Iceland who made his American studio film debut in 2012’s hit “Contraband,” which starred Wahlberg and Kate Beckinsale.

Discussing his choice to join the team, Kormákur says: “The script had this modern Western feel, which felt like something that I could play with and be stylized in finding ways of visualizing the story. There’s a lot of humanity to the characters. We like them as we follow them, even though they’re living in an elevated, but not necessarily unrealistic, criminal world.”

He sums: “Ultimately, 2 Guns is a character-driven film that pays homage to Westerns through the feel and scope of the landscape.”  Kormákur readily admits that he is drawn to action scripts, but not simply for the sake of delivering adrenaline-fueled moments. “I look at what I can add to it, and I ask myself if I connect with the material or if it will just be another day at work,” he states. “I get attached to material that I feel I can put myself into and help the actors; that gets me excited.”  Opening across the Philippines on Sept. 18, “2 Guns” is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.
